Gül Kozacioglu was born in 1976 in Ankara, Turkey, and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is a photographer working with video, technology, music and poetry in her installations and performances. She applies a visually non-referential language to parameters space and time in her expression, even of socially pertinent subjects such as crises, censorship, war & migration, choosing unspecified natural environments as settings for her work.
She holds a BA degree in Philosophy from Bosphorus University.
She later studied Aesthetics and Criticism and Interpretation of Architectural Texts for an extended study in Philosophy of Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Metu University.
‘SMS LOVE’ aired in Istanbul and Copenhagen in 2008/9, interactively beaming audience SMS messages as poems of love with her dances to the world on media screens and projections in the public space. In Istanbul, the performance was broadcast from the YAMA media screen atop The Marmara Pera Hotel. Whilst in Copenhagen, it was projected from a building façade above Café Det Elektriske Hjørne on Ny Østergade. The interactive performance addressed issues of surveillance and censorship in the public realm.
‘STARDUST’, a collaborative work, was realized as an interactive performance, installed at St Helena’s Chapel in Istanbul, in September 2017, as a meditation on the transcendence between material and immaterial states, and the current dichotomy of global political systems and the living breathing individual. The video of the installation is of the beautiful Aegean Sea, over which the international migration crises has unrolled. Now, “I SEE YOU” calls out for a transformation of our ways of being and shifts of consciousness for more sustainable practices in all realms of life.
